About Image Metadata Checker
Use this free online image metadata checker to view EXIF data and all other hidden information stored inside your images. When a photo is taken with a digital camera or smartphone, the file stores detailed metadata such as camera model, lens info, GPS coordinates, date and time, exposure settings and much more.
This photo metadata viewer works entirely in your browser. No images are uploaded to any server - everything happens locally on your device, so your photos stay completely private.
What Metadata Can Be Detected?
- Camera information - Make, model and lens used to capture the photo.
- Camera settings - Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, exposure mode, metering mode, white balance and flash settings.
- GPS coordinates - Latitude, longitude and altitude where the photo was taken, with a Google Maps link.
- Date and time - Original capture date, digitization date and last modification date.
- Software - Editing software used to process the image.
- PNG properties - Bit depth, color type, compression, filter and interlace method.
- PNG text chunks - Title, author, description, copyright and other text metadata.
- Content Credentials (C2PA) - AI generation info, software agent, digital source type and action history.

Image Metadata Checker FAQ
Is the image metadata checker free?
Yes, completely free. There is no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many images you can inspect.
Which image formats are supported?
JPG, JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files up to 20MB are supported. EXIF data is most commonly found in JPEG files from cameras and smartphones. PNG files contain properties and optional text chunks. C2PA content credentials may be embedded in PNG and JPEG files.
Can I see GPS location on a map?
Yes. If GPS coordinates are found in the image, the tool displays latitude and longitude values and provides a Google Maps link so you can view the location directly.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All processing runs entirely in your browser using the File API and typed arrays, so your images never leave your device.
Some metadata is missing - why?
Not all images contain EXIF or metadata. Social media platforms, messaging apps and editing software often strip metadata when saving or sharing images. Screenshots typically do not contain EXIF data either.
What are Content Credentials (C2PA)?
C2PA is an open standard for content provenance. It records the history and origin of an image, including whether it was AI-generated. Images with C2PA data show their software agent, digital source type and action history, which helps identify AI-generated or edited content.
